Assuming you’re eligible for Navy Federal Credit Union membership, how should you approach choosing the right credit card for you? You’ll want to focus on a few key factors, including annual fee and rewards.

Annual Fee

Many of the best rewards credit cards have annual fees, and they can be worth it if you take advantage of all their benefits. But not everyone wants to pay an annual fee just to earn rewards, and if you fall into that category, you’ll find several options through NFCU. Only one of its cards, the Navy Federal Flagship Rewards, charges an annual fee.

Rewards

If you’re hoping to get points or cash back on your spending, take a look at the rewards structure of each Navy Federal credit card. Some cards offer a flat cash-back rate on every purchase, while others earn bonus points in certain categories, like restaurants and gas. The best card for you is the one that earns you the most rewards based on your spending habits.

Interest Rates and Intro APR

Several Navy Federal credit cards offer introductory APR periods, which can help you pay off debt with minimal interest fees. Depending on the card, the intro offer applies to either balance transfers (which can be helpful when you have existing debt on another credit card) or purchases (which can give you some breathing room to pay off a large expense that you can’t afford up front).

Navy Federal Credit Union isn’t your standard credit card issuer, and its advantages and drawbacks reflect its unique positioning.

Pros

  • Low or no annual fees
  • Low interest rates
  • Highly rated customer service
  • No foreign transaction fees across all cards

Cons

  • No perks like statement credits that are common on other rewards cards
  • Limited options for redeeming rewards
  • Membership is required, and eligibility is limited

All Navy Federal Credit Union credit cards come with the following perks:

  • Lower-than-average credit card APRs — like other credit unions, Navy Federal caps credit interest rates at 18%
  • No balance transfer fees
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • Free access to your credit score
  • 24/7 help from U.S.-based member service team
  • Fraud monitoring
  • Zero liability for confirmed unauthorized transactions
  • Ability to freeze and unfreeze your cards in case you lose them
  • Tap to pay (contactless payments)
  • Member Deals for bonus rewards or cash back at participating retailers

Many of these benefits are industry-standard, but I find the lack of foreign transaction fees across the board to be especially impressive. This comes from someone who’s accidentally used her favorite cash-back card abroad only to be hit with a 3% fee.

A few cards also offer secondary rental car insurance (Collision Damage Waiver), but note this benefit is offered through Visa and Mastercard, so it only applies to certain NFCU cards, including the cashRewards Cards, Flagship Rewards, GO REWARDS, and Platinum. Whenever I rent a car, I pay with a card that offers CDW for extra peace of mind. I’ve never had to use it, but the more coverage, the better.

Visa Signature Flagship Travel Rewards Credit Card

As NFCU’s one card with an annual fee, the Flagship Rewards offers the most perks. These include:

  • Free Amazon Prime membership
  • A statement credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck
  • Lost luggage reimbursement
  • Travel accident insurance
  • Travel and emergency assistance
  • Visa Signature card benefits, including travel and shopping discounts

Not everyone is eligible for Navy Federal membership, but there are many strong alternatives outside of the credit union, no matter what kind of card you’re looking for. We’ll highlight some top options to consider in each credit card category.

Long Intro APR: Wells Fargo Reflect Card

Like the Navy Federal Platinum Card, the Wells Fargo Reflect® Card comes with an intro APR offer, but it’s actually even stronger. The Platinum offers 0.99% intro APR for 12 months on balances transferred from a non-Navy Federal credit card within 60 days of account opening, then 10.24% - 18.00% Variable APR. A 10.24% - 18.00% Variable APR will apply for purchases. Meanwhile, the Reflect Card offers 0% intro APR for 21 months from account opening on purchases and on qualifying balance transfers, then a 17.49%, 23.99%, or 28.24% Variable APR. So long as you pay off your debt completely before the intro period ends, you’ll save more on interest with the Reflect Card, but note that its post-intro APR can be much higher.

Beyond being one of the best low-APR credit cards, the Reflect Card comes with cell phone insurance (subject to a $25 deductible) when you use it to pay your phone bill.

Bonus Rewards on Everyday Spending: Amex Blue Cash Everyday Card

The Navy Federal More Rewards Card earns bonus rewards on everyday expenses like food, gas, and supermarkets, but the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express, an advertising partner, is a strong alternative. It’s one of our picks for the best no-annual-fee credit cards because it earns 3% cash back on groceries at U.S. supermarkets and on U.S. online retail purchases and gas (on up to $6,000 per year in purchases in each category, then 1%). I appreciate the online retail purchases category, especially as you don’t see that on many cards.

The Blue Cash Everyday Card also comes with a 0% intro APR on purchases and on balance transfers for 15 months from the date of account opening, then 19.49%-28.49% Variable APR.

Travel-Focused Rewards and Benefits: Chase Sapphire Preferred Card

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is one of the best mid-range travel credit cards, and it’s worth considering if you don’t mind paying a $95 annual fee. It earns 5x points on Chase Travel℠ purchases, 3x points on dining and 2x points on other travel, compared to 3x points on travel and 2x points on everything else with the Navy Federal Flagship Rewards Card.

But the points currencies aren’t identical; you have more options for redeeming Chase Ultimate Rewards® points, including transferring them to airline and hotel programs. I find them significantly more valuable, especially for booking business-class award flights with United and hotel stays with Hyatt.

Follow these steps if you’re interested in applying for a Navy Federal credit card:

1. Become a member if you’re not one already

2. Use NFCU’s prequalification tool online to check which cards you’re eligible for without initiating a hard credit pull

3. Choose a card and complete the application, either online, over the phone or in-branch

What’s the best credit card to have with Navy Federal?

The best Navy Federal credit card depends on your priorities and spending patterns. The cashRewards cards could make sense if you want to earn a flat rate of cash back on every purchase, while the Flagship Rewards has the most travel benefits.

What credit score do I need for a Navy Federal credit card?

You should aim to have a credit score in the average range or higher to qualify for most Navy Federal credit cards, except for the Flagship Rewards, which typically requires very good to excellent credit. Note that your credit score is just one factor that issuers consider when evaluating your application.

What’s the easiest Navy Federal credit card to get approved for?

The easiest Navy Federal card to get approved for is the Navy Federal Credit Union® cashRewards Secured Credit Card. This card requires an upfront deposit, which will be your card’s spending limit.

Can I get a Navy Federal credit card with a 600 credit score?

You may be able to get a Navy Federal credit card with a 600 credit score, which is considered fair. While the credit union doesn’t publish exact minimum credit score requirements, NFCU accepts fair/average credit scores for many of its cards.
