Chase issues one of the most powerful travel points currencies in existence: Chase Ultimate Rewards®.

Only the best Chase credit cards earn these rewards. You can redeem them for cash, use them to book travel directly, or convert them into airline miles and hotel points with valuable travel partners.

One of the most popular Chase transfer partners is United MileagePlus. United is a ubiquitous U.S. carrier with rewards that can take you just about anywhere you want to go. Here’s a quick and dirty guide for how to transfer Chase points to United Airlines.

Yes, you can transfer Chase points to United MileagePlus, along with over a dozen other partner hotel loyalty programs and airline frequent flyer programs

There’s one catch, however: While many credit cards collect Chase Ultimate Rewards points, only a select few Chase travel credit cards give you the power to transfer points to airline and hotel partners (including United):

While credit cards such as the Chase Freedom Unlimited® and Chase Freedom Flex® also earn Chase points, they can’t be converted into airline miles or hotel points unless you’ve got one of the above credit cards.

You can transfer Chase points to United at a 1:1 ratio. Points typically transfer instantly, meaning if you see an award seat you want, you can book it right away. That’s a big deal; not all airline miles are immediately reflected in your transferred points.

It’s also worth noting that Chase stipulates you must transfer points in increments of 1,000.

Transferring Chase points to United is a snap. Think of it like transferring points from your savings account to your checking account. Here’s how it works.

Step 1: Log In to Chase Ultimate Rewards With Your Eligible Card

Head to the Chase Ultimate Rewards website (you can also find a link within your online Chase account). Upon signing in, you’ll see all your Ultimate Rewards-earning cards listed.

Choose one that allows you to transfer points to airline partners. In my case, it’s my trusty Chase Sapphire Preferred Card.

Step 2: Find “Transfer Points To Partners”

On your account dashboard, look for the tab labeled “Travel” and click it. You’ll see a link that will take you to the points transfer page.

Step 3: Find United Airlines

From here, you can browse all eligible airline transfer partners. Find United Airlines and click it.

Step 4: Confirm Your United Account

If you haven’t already, you’ll have to link your United MileagePlus account to your Chase account by entering your loyalty number. If you don’t have a United account, create one first (it’s free to join).

If you’ve already taken care of this, simply hit the “Next” button.

Step 5: Choose the Number of Points You’d Like To Transfer

You’ll then be taken to a page that prompts you to enter any amount of available points to transfer to United — again, in increments of 1,000. Confirm your transfer (this typically involves multi-factor authentication), and your points will be deposited into your United account instantly.

Remember, Chase points transfer to United Airlines at a 1:1 ratio (1 Chase point = 1 United Airlines mile). This is important when deciding whether to convert your Chase points. That’s because we estimate that:

  • Chase points value is an average of 2+ cents each. You can often achieve this value by transferring to partners like World of Hyatt, Air Canada Aeroplan, Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, and more.
  • United miles value is an average of 1.1 cents each toward flights on United and its partners.

At first glance, it seems ludicrous to trade a Chase point for a United mile.

But in some situations, it can be an absolute no-brainer. For example, you can book a one-way business class flight from Newark (EWR) to Geneva (GVA) for as little as 80,000 United miles and $5.60 in taxes and fees.

That exact same seat costs a staggering $7,654. That amounts to a value of more than 9.5 cents per United mile — considerably more than the average Chase points value. I’ve squeezed tens of thousands of dollars out of United Airlines miles by flying similarly expensive business-class seats on partners like SWISS and Turkish Airlines.

To decide whether it makes sense to transfer Chase points to United, use the 2-cent benchmark as your guide. If you get around 2 cents per point on your award flight, it can be a good deal to transfer Chase points. Here’s the formula to figure out the value of your points:

(Cash price of airfare – award taxes and fees) / required points = value per point

Note: Some United awards offer the lowest prices exclusively to holders of any of the best United credit cards. If you intend to book United awards regularly (even a few times per year, in fact), it could be worth opening a card like the United℠ Explorer Card.

Transferring Chase points to United may not be a good idea in the following situations:

  • Cheap airfare: Some United flights, particularly on routes where many other airlines compete, can be quite inexpensive. It may be wiser to pay with cash in these cases and save your points for a more lucrative redemption.
  • Award availability is scarce: If you can’t find award seats that align with your travel dates or preferences, choosing another airline or using alternative booking methods can be the smarter move.
  • High-priced award rates: Because United prices its award flights dynamically, you may find jaw-dropping award rates at times. Consider booking through a different program or method in these cases.
  • You don’t have a redemption in mind: Chase points transfers to United are irreversible, so unless you have an immediate need for United miles, don’t transfer points until absolutely necessary.

Transferring Chase Ultimate Rewards points to United Airlines is fairly straightforward. But there are still mistakes that can ruin your plans if you aren’t aware of them upfront. Here are a few common mistakes:

  • Changing your mind after you transfer: When you transfer Chase points to any partner (including United), you won’t be able to transfer them back into your Ultimate Rewards account. Transfers are final — so be absolutely sure you want to convert your Chase points before initiating the conversion.
  • Not confirming seat availability: There may be seats available, but the price may have increased since you last checked. Double-check right before you transfer.
  • Not checking Chase Travel℠ first: Booking through Chase’s proprietary travel agency may give you a better value per point than transferring to United. Depending on the specific travel you book — and the Chase credit card you have — Chase points are worth between 1 and 2 cents each when redeemed this way.

Is it worth transferring Chase points to United Airlines?

United often does not offer the absolute lowest price. You’ll only know if it’s worth transferring Chase points to United Airlines after you’ve examined your other options. Can you get a better deal by booking directly through Chase Travel? Have you looked at other Chase airline partners to see if they’ve got even more reasonable award prices and fees?

How much is 50,000 United MileagePlus miles worth?

Again, the value of United MileagePlus miles can vary dramatically depending on how you use them. But we estimate that they’re worth an average of 1.1 cents each. That makes 50,000 United miles worth $550 in flights, on average.

Do Chase Ultimate Rewards expire?

Chase Ultimate Rewards points do not expire as long as you’ve got an Ultimate Rewards-earning credit card open.
