What Are American Express Membership Rewards Points?
American Express Membership Rewards is Amex’s proprietary rewards program. You can earn Amex Membership Rewards points from welcome offers and eligible purchases made with participating American Express cards (an advertising partner).
Those points can be redeemed for travel, gift cards, statement credits and more. But for travelers who know how to maximize value, the real power lies in transferring points to airline frequent flyer programs and hotel loyalty programs that partner with Amex. You can often unlock outsized redemptions that cash or fixed-value redemptions can’t match.

How Long Do American Express Membership Rewards Points Take To Transfer?
This is the question that matters most when you’re trying to book award flights or stays before they disappear. The short answer: transfer times depend on the partner.
Most transfers are completed within 48 hours, but some may take longer or shorter than that. But when you’re trying to book a business-class seat or a luxury hotel room that could vanish in hours, every minute counts.
Amex immediately deducts points from your Membership Rewards account when you initiate a transfer. The time it takes to process the transfer is determined by the receiving loyalty program, not Amex. Keep in mind that transfers are final and there is no way to reverse the transaction. With that caveat in mind, make sure to double-check your account number and the partner program before you submit.

Most transfers from airline partners are processed within a few business days of submission if your rewards account is linked to Membership Rewards. Transfer times vary by partner, so timelines aren’t uniform.

Some of the fastest airline transfer programs, like Delta SkyMiles and JetBlue TrueBlue, typically process within 48 hours — and at times can be nearly instant. International programs like ANA Mileage Club can take up to four days. In rare cases, if there’s an issue verifying your account details, the transfer may be delayed.
I learned this lesson the hard way on a Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer business-class flight I wanted to book a few years ago. I found business-class availability between New York (JFK) and Frankfurt (FRA) and initiated the transfer immediately; however, the award disappeared while I waited for my miles to post. That’s an unfortunate reality of booking award tickets.
Hotel Transfer Times
Hotel transfers follow a similar timeline to airlines. Hilton Honors and Choice Privileges transfers are generally completed within 48 hours, while Marriott Bonvoy transfers may take a little longer. Again, in practice, transfers may be completed nearly instantaneously.
Factors That Affect American Express Membership Rewards Transfer Times
Transfer speed isn’t just about which partner you choose. Several other variables can slow things down or, at best, speed them up.
- Whether your account is already linked: If you’ve never transferred to a partner before, you’ll need to add your loyalty account number to your Membership Rewards profile before initiating the transfer.
- Name and account number accuracy: Your transfer may be delayed or rejected if the name on your Membership Rewards account doesn’t match the name on your rewards account.
- Partner system outages or maintenance: Rewards programs occasionally have maintenance windows or technical issues that delay incoming transfers.
- Transfer bonuses: Amex sometimes runs transfer bonuses to specific partners where you’ll earn more points or miles. These promotions often are extremely popular, which may lead to slower processing times.
If I need points in a specific program by a certain date, I give myself at least a week of buffer. Proper planning can save a lot of stress.
