Best Credit Cards With Extended Warranty Coverage of May 2026

You’re checking out online — new laptop, new espresso machine, maybe a TV on a Black Friday sale — and there it is: “Add a 2-year protection plan for $129.99?” Skip it and risk being stuck with a repair bill or worse, a $1,200 doorstop. Click it and spend money on coverage you may not need. It’s an uncomfortable little gamble that plays out millions of times a day at digital checkout.

Here’s the thing: That dilemma may already be solved by the card you’re paying with. Credit card extended warranty protection is one of the most overlooked benefits in the rewards card world, offered by issuers ranging from American Express to Chase to Citi on cards with and without annual fees.

When you pay for an eligible item with a qualifying card, many issuers automatically add one to two additional years of coverage after the manufacturer’s warranty expires, with no enrollment, no monthly premium and no checkbox required.

A manufacturer’s warranty is the coverage a brand stands behind when you buy a new product — typically one year for most electronics and appliances, occasionally longer. Credit card extended warranty coverage picks up where the original warranty runs out. When you use a qualifying card to purchase an eligible item, your card issuer automatically extends the original manufacturer’s warranty by a set period, most commonly an additional year, at no extra cost to you.

The benefit is tied to your card, not the product. You don’t register anything at the time of purchase, opt into a program or pay a premium. The coverage exists as long as you pay with the right card, which means the protection is only as good as your awareness that it’s there. Most cardholders find out about it the hard way, either when something breaks, and they think to check, or when they’ve already paid for a retailer’s protection plan they didn’t need.

It’s worth understanding what “extended” actually means here: This benefit adds time onto an existing manufacturer’s warranty; it doesn’t replace it. If a product comes with a 90-day warranty, your card may extend coverage by one additional year. If it comes with a two-year warranty, some issuers — Citi in particular — could still add another two years on top. The extension mirrors what the manufacturer’s warranty covers, meaning it’s a defect-and-malfunction benefit, not a catch-all. Accidental damage, loss and theft are separate benefits entirely.

The mechanics are straightforward: pay for an eligible item using a qualifying card, and the coverage activates automatically. There’s no enrollment form and no phone call required at the time of purchase. The extension kicks in on the day your original manufacturer’s warranty expires and runs for as long as your card’s benefit allows — typically one year, or two years in Citi’s case, on select cards.

That said, “automatic” doesn’t mean universal. Each issuer sets its own terms for how long original warranties must be to qualify, how much it will reimburse, and which types of failures are covered. Chase, for example, only extends warranties of three years or less. Amex covers warranties up to five years. Pay with the wrong card for the wrong product, and you may get nothing.

Knowing your card’s specific benefit guide before a big purchase — not after something breaks  — is the move. Coverage is generally considered secondary to any other warranty or service plan in place, meaning your card steps in only after all other coverage runs out.

This benefit earns its keep on purchases where the manufacturer’s warranty feels thin relative to the item’s cost and the length of time you expect to use it. Some situations where it makes a real difference:

  • Big electronics: Laptops, TVs and home theater setups with one-year warranties are the sweet spot. A $1,500 laptop that dies at month 14 is exactly what this benefit was designed for.
  • Home appliances: Refrigerators, dishwashers and washing machines routinely fail after the one-year warranty window closes. Using a qualifying card at the time of purchase incurs no extra cost and automatically adds a year of coverage.
  • Gaming consoles and kids’ tech: Tablets, gaming systems and wireless headphones live hard, short lives in a kid’s hands. The one-year manufacturer’s warranty on most consoles is optimistic at best.
  • Online purchases of name-brand electronics: Buying a new TV on Amazon or Best Buy’s website with a qualifying card means you’re covered the moment you hit place order — no store warranty upsell needed.

Coverage mirrors the manufacturer’s warranty exactly, which is both a benefit and a limitation. If the original warranty covered defects in materials and workmanship, so does the extension. Each issuer has its own rules, but most eligible claims fall into these categories:

  • Manufacturing defects that cause the item to stop functioning normally
  • Mechanical or electrical failures that aren’t caused by user damage

Items that are covered often include:

  • Appliances and large electronics: Refrigerators, dishwashers, ovens, TVs, home theater systems
  • Consumer electronics: Laptops, tablets, smartphones, gaming consoles, cameras

Amex and Citi stand out for covering original warranties up to five years, giving those cards an edge on longer-warranty items like certain appliances. Chase and Visa Infinite cap eligibility at three years on the original warranty, which excludes some higher-end appliances and tools that come with longer coverage out of the box.

The exclusions list is where you can get tripped up, especially if you assume broad coverage and discover the fine print after something breaks. A few of these may be genuinely surprising. Terms vary by issuer, but across the board, don’t count on coverage for:

  • Accidental damage: This is the most common mix-up. If you drop your laptop, spill coffee on your keyboard or crack a screen, that’s not a warranty event. That’s purchase protection, which is a separate benefit entirely.
  • Motorized vehicles: Cars, motorcycles, boats, aircraft and anything engine-powered are excluded.
  • Used, refurbished or secondhand items: If you bought it on eBay or Facebook Marketplace, it almost certainly won’t qualify. Items generally need to be purchased new from an authorized retailer. Refurbished items might be covered; check your policy for details.
  • Software: Computer software, apps and digital downloads don’t qualify.
  • Medical equipment and devices
  • Real estate, land and attached fixtures
  • Items with a lifetime guarantee: Counterintuitively, if it comes with a lifetime warranty, it doesn’t qualify for an extension.
  • Items where the original warranty exceeds your card’s eligibility threshold: A product with a four-year manufacturer’s warranty purchased on a Chase card won’t qualify, since Chase caps eligibility at three years. Know your card’s limit before you check out.

Not all extended warranty benefits are created equal, and differences among issuers go well beyond the number of extra months you get. Eligibility thresholds, per-claim caps, which cards in a lineup actually carry the benefit, and whether your card’s network plays a role all vary enough that knowing your specific card’s guide to benefits matters as much as knowing the general rule.

American Express Extended Warranty

Amex’s extended warranty adds up to one additional year of coverage on eligible items with manufacturer warranties of five years or less, with a per-claim cap of $10,000 and a $50,000 annual maximum. One practical distinction worth knowing: Amex requires you to charge the full purchase price to your card or to pay for the purchase using Amex rewards, and the benefit is limited to purchases made within the U.S. and its territories, so your souvenirs won’t qualify.

Unlike Chase or Citi, the Amex benefit is tied specifically to Amex credit cards that charge an annual fee. No-annual-fee Amex rewards cards, including the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express, an advertising partner, do not include extended warranty protection. The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express, American Express® Gold Card and American Express Platinum Card® (advertising partners) all carry it, making those cards a stronger choice for big-ticket purchases where the benefit is likely to come into play.

Interestingly, some no-annual-fee co-branded cards, like the Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card, offer extended warranty benefits, just like their annual-fee counterparts.

Chase Extended Warranty

Chase extends eligible manufacturer warranties by one additional year on items with original warranties of three years or less. The cap is $10,000 per claim and $50,000 per account. One thing that sets Chase apart from Amex and Citi: You don’t have to charge the full purchase price — a partial charge or rewards redemption qualifies for the benefit, though reimbursement is limited to the amount actually put on the card.

The benefit runs across Chase’s credit card lineup more consistently than you might expect. The Chase Sapphire Reserve®, Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, Chase Freedom Unlimited®, and Chase Freedom Flex® all carry it — which means you don’t need a premium card to use it. Many of Chase’s co-branded retail, airline and hotel credit cards carry it as well.

The three-year original warranty cap is the main limitation to keep in mind: Items with longer manufacturer warranties, such as certain appliances or tools, fall outside Chase’s eligibility window.

Citi Extended Warranty

Citi, an advertising partner, stands out from every other major issuer on this benefit: Select cards add up to 24 months of additional coverage, compared to the standard one year you get elsewhere. That’s a meaningful edge for big purchases. A laptop with a one-year manufacturer’s warranty could be covered for a total of three years just by using the right Citi credit card at checkout.

The caveat is that not all Citi cards offer the same benefit. Cards in the ThankYou family — including the Citi Strata Premier® Card and Citi Strata Elite℠ Card, both advertising partners — add a flat 24 months beyond the original warranty on eligible items with warranties up to five years. The Citi Double Cash® Card, an advertising partner, and Citi Custom Cash® Card work differently: they double the original warranty, up to a maximum of 24 months, meaning a product with a 12-month warranty gets an additional 12 months, not 24. If you have a Citi card, check your specific benefits guide before assuming you’ll get the full two years.

Capital One Extended Warranty

Capital One’s extended warranty adds one year of coverage to eligible items with manufacturer warranties between one and three years, with caps of $10,000 per claim and $50,000 per cardholder. The benefit is strongest on Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card, which runs on the Visa Infinite network and carries that network’s verified terms. Interestingly, the benefit applies to international purchases.

The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card and Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card have historically carried the benefit as well, though Capital One’s ongoing migration of select cards to the Discover network is worth flagging: Cards moved to Discover may lose this benefit entirely, since Discover does not offer extended warranty coverage.

If you carry a Capital One credit card and aren’t sure which network you’re on, the easiest way to check is to look at the logo on the back of your card. The Venture X is confirmed to stay on Visa, making it the safest Capital One bet for this benefit going forward.

Wells Fargo Extended Warranty

Wells Fargo credit cards no longer offer extended warranty coverage.

Bank of America Extended Warranty

The information regarding Visa Signature benefits was collected independently by CardCritics™ and was accurate at the time of publication.

Bank of America is worth a brief mention here, but don’t go in with high expectations: Very few Bank of America credit cards carry extended warranty protection, and the ones that do, such as the Bank of America® Premium Rewards® credit card, run it through the Visa network. The benefit, called Warranty Manager, doubles the time period of the original manufacturer’s warranty up to one additional year for warranties of three years or less, capped at $10,000 per claim and $50,000 per cardholder.

Discover Extended Warranty

Discover does not currently offer extended warranty protection on any of its consumer credit cards. If you carry a Discover credit card as your primary card for everyday purchases, this is a gap worth knowing about, particularly given Capital One’s ongoing migration of cards to the Discover network. This may also affect benefit eligibility for existing Capital One cardholders in the future.

U.S. Bank Extended Warranty

U.S. Bank offers extended warranty protection on a number of consumer cards, such as the no-annual-fee U.S. Bank Shield™ Visa® Card and the U.S. Bank Shopper Cash Rewards® Visa Signature® Card ($0 intro annual fee for the first year, then $95 ). Both add up to one year to original warranties of three years or less, with a $10,000 per-claim and $50,000 per-cardholder cap, in line with standard Visa terms. The Shield Card is worth noting as a solid option with extended warranty coverage for those who want the benefit without paying an annual fee.

The general process is the same across issuers: Once something breaks, you contact the benefits administrator listed in your card’s benefit guide, submit documentation, and wait for a resolution, either reimbursement, a repair, or a replacement.

One thing worth doing at the time of purchase, not after: save everything. The original receipt, the manufacturer’s warranty card or documentation, and the credit card statement showing the purchase are the core of any claim. If you don’t have the actual warranty, check online, as many products list their warranties on their websites.

When something breaks, and you believe you have a covered claim, here’s what you’ll generally need to submit:

  • Itemized sales receipt showing the purchase price and item description
  • Credit card statement confirming the purchase was made on the qualifying card
  • Copy of the original manufacturer’s warranty: This is non-negotiable; you need it to establish what coverage existed and when it expired
  • Repair estimate from an authorized service provider: Most administrators want a written estimate before they approve a claim, not a receipt for repairs you’ve already paid for
  • Description and serial number of the item
  • Any store-provided warranty or service contract, if applicable

How you actually file differs by issuer, with many cards allowing you to file online. Check your card’s benefits manual for details.

Mistakes To Avoid When Filing a Claim

The benefit is automatic at purchase — but the claim process is anything but passive, and a few easy mistakes can cost you coverage you’ve already earned.

Missing the Filing Deadline

This is the most common mistake, and I’ve been caught by deadlines in the past. Make sure to check your card’s benefits guide to know your due dates. Miss the window, and the claim may not be honored. Don’t wait to see if the item fixes itself.

Getting a Repair Estimate Before Filing, Not After

Most administrators want the estimate before they authorize any repair work. If you take the item in, pay for the repair, and then try to file a claim using a receipt rather than an estimate, you may encounter resistance. Get the estimate from an authorized service provider first, submit it with your claim, and wait for approval before spending money on the fix.

Filing Too Soon

Extended warranty coverage begins the day the manufacturer’s warranty expires — not before. If you file a claim while the item is still under the original warranty, the card benefit won’t apply. Work through the manufacturer first, then invoke the card’s extension if the item fails after that window closes.

The cards above represent the strongest options across major issuers, but they’re far from the only ones worth knowing about. Extended warranty coverage appears on a wide range of co-branded and no-annual-fee cards — making this benefit more accessible than most people assume. Here are a few worth a second look:

  • Prime Visa: A no-annual-fee option (with Prime membership) running on the Visa Signature network, which means one additional year of coverage on eligible purchases with original warranties of three years or less. Given how much people buy on Amazon, using this card for electronics and appliances you’d actually want covered is a natural fit.
  • United℠ Explorer Card: One of the more well-rounded co-branded airline credit cards, the United Explorer carries Visa Signature extended warranty terms: one additional year on warranties of three years or less, $10,000 per claim. It also covers free checked bags on United and two United Club one-time passes annually, which helps justify the annual fee beyond just the warranty benefit.
  • Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card: Some Amex-issued co-branded cards carry the same one-year extended warranty benefit as other Amex cards on purchases made in the U.S. It’s especially great on a card with no annual fee, like the Delta Blue.
  • Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard®: Given that Citi’s standard coverage is longer than other issuers on qualifying cards, the Citi AA Platinum Select Card, an advertising partner, is a solid option for American Airlines flyers who want the warranty benefit alongside airline perks.
  • Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card: A Chase-issued hotel co-branded card carrying the same extended warranty terms as other Chase Visa Signature cards: one additional year on warranties of three years or less, $10,000 per claim.

Most retailers charge 10% to 20% of an item’s purchase price for a two-year extended warranty at checkout. On a $1,200 laptop, that’s $120 to $240 handed over at the register for coverage your card may already provide for free. Use the benefit once on a single significant purchase, and you’ve likely recovered more value than most cards charge in annual fees.

No-annual-fee cards make the calculus even simpler. The Chase Freedom Unlimited and Freedom Flex both carry one-year extended warranty coverage at no cost to hold the card. There’s no fee to offset, no break-even calculation required. Even if you only invoke the benefit once every few years on a $600 purchase, you’re ahead.

The extended warranty benefit alone isn’t a reason to choose a card — rewards rates, welcome bonuses and other perks matter more in that decision — but as a tiebreaker between two otherwise comparable cards, knowing one covers your purchases for an extra year and one doesn’t is a meaningful difference.

Do all credit cards offer extended warranty protection?

No. Extended warranty coverage is not a standard feature across every card; it’s tied to the card’s network tier or issuer. Visa Signature and Visa Infinite cards usually carry it; basic Visa cards generally don’t. Some Mastercard consumer cards include it, though the coverage window is narrower than that of Visa or Amex. Discover and Wells Fargo offer no extended warranty benefit on any of their cards.

Is credit card extended warranty better than buying one from the retailer?

For most purchases, yes, and the math is straightforward. Retailer protection plans typically run 10% to 20% of the item’s purchase price and are sold at the register when your resistance is low. Credit card extended warranty costs nothing extra, activates automatically, and in Citi’s case adds up to two full years beyond the manufacturer’s warranty.

Does credit card extended warranty cover accidental damage?

No, and this is the most common misconception about the benefit. Extended warranty coverage mirrors the manufacturer’s warranty, meaning it applies only to defects in materials or workmanship. If a product stops working on its own, you have a claim. If you drop it, crack the screen, spill something on it or it gets stolen, that falls under purchase protection, which is a separate benefit that not all cards carry.
