6 American Express Blue Cash Everyday Benefits You Didn’t Know About

A smiling young woman checks out groceries at the supermarket cash register.

The Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express, an advertising partner, gets high ratings for its strong cash-back earning rates paired with a lack of annual fee. This top cash-back credit card earns competitive rewards at U.S. supermarkets, U.S. gas stations and on U.S. online retail purchases. It also has a welcome offer of $200 back after you spend $2,000 on purchases within the first six months of account opening (you will receive the $200 back in the form of a statement credit).

But the card has other perks that you might find appealing. Here’s a closer look at Amex Blue Cash Everyday Card benefits you might have missed.

As an Amex cardholder, you can earn rewards based on eligible spending. Navigate to the list of “Amex Offers” on your account (updated weekly) and add the offers you’re interested in to your card. (Enrollment required)

Here’s a sample of the Amex offers I can see in my Blue Cash Everyday Card account (note that not everyone gets the same offers):

  • 10% back on a purchase at Shake Shack (up to $4 back)
  • 4% back on online Steve Madden purchases (up to $250 back)
  • 8% back on prepaid hotel bookings through Amex (up to $100 back)

I try to stay up to date on my Amex Offers, but I often don’t use them. They usually offer rewards on purchases that I wouldn’t have made otherwise, so I’d still actually be spending extra, even with the promotion.

Purchase protection* is one of the best credit card perks, but it often goes unused. With this coverage, you can get your money back if an eligible recent purchase is stolen or accidentally damaged.

That coverage applies for up to 90 days from your purchase date and can provide up to $1,000 per purchase, and up to $50,000 per calendar year.

If you’re already a Disney Bundle or Home Chef subscriber, the Blue Cash Everyday Card can make these services more affordable. You can earn:

  • Get up to a $7 monthly statement credit after using your enrolled Card for a subscription purchase, including a bundle subscription purchase, at Disneyplus.com, Hulu.com, or Plus.espn.com U.S. websites. Subject to auto-renewal.
  • Up to $15 in monthly statement credits to cover a Home Chef subscription when you enroll

The Blue Cash Everyday Card offers a 0% intro APR on purchases and on balance transfers for 15 months from the date of account opening, then 20.24%-29.24% Variable APR.

These twin Amex Blue Cash Everyday Card perks can help you pay off balances from another credit card or spread out payments on a larger purchase without accruing credit card debt. Although there are other cards on the market with longer introductory APR offers, they don’t have a rewards program.

Use the cash back you earned on purchases at Amazon.com and you’ll get the same value for your rewards as if you’d redeemed for a statement credit.

Amazon also qualifies for a 3% rewards rate on up to $6,000 spent with U.S. online retailers per year (then 1%). However, redeeming for statement credits can save you more money in the long run. You’ll earn more cash rewards on, say, a $180 purchase than you would on a $150 purchase that you discounted with $30 in credit card rewards.

The Blue Cash Everyday Card comes with secondary car rental insurance* that can provide coverage against damage and theft if you use your card to pay for your rental. Secondary coverage only covers costs your primary insurance doesn’t, but this can still be useful.

Some credit cards offer primary rental car insurance, though this is rare on a no-annual-fee travel credit card. The Bilt Mastercard offers primary car insurance for no annual fee. You can also find this perk on the $95-annual-fee Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card.

What is the welcome offer on the American Express Blue Cash Everyday Card?

The welcome offer on the Blue Cash Everyday Card is $200 back after you spend $2,000 on purchases within the first six months of account opening. The bonus is awarded as a statement credit.

What are the cons of the Blue Cash Everyday Card?

The 3% cash back categories (U.S gas stations, U.S. supermarkets and U.S. online retail purchases) are capped at $6,000 in spending per year each. After that, you’ll earn just 1% cash back. The card charges a 2.7% foreign transaction fee and the travel protections are also limited. However, these are typical drawbacks for a card with no annual fee.

What is the minimum income for the Blue Cash Everyday Card?

The Amex Blue Cash Everyday Card doesn’t mention a minimum income in its terms. You’ll generally need a good to excellent credit score to be considered for a rewards credit card, and income can also be a factor.
