A dining rewards credit card offers extra cash back or points on purchases that fall under the dining category. This typically includes restaurants, cafes and other establishments that serve food, as well as delivery platforms like DoorDash and GrubHub.

If you eat out or order delivery regularly, a dining rewards card is a smart way to maximize your spending.

There isn’t one definitive best credit card for dining; the best choice for you will depend on several factors.

Make Sure You Understand What’s Eligible for Bonus Rewards

Most dining credit cards earn rewards on almost every type of dining purchase — from restaurants to cafes that serve food to delivery platforms — but not every card defines this category in the same way. The best option for you just depends on your favorite spots to eat.

Also, note that dining credit cards don’t necessarily earn bonus rewards on grocery spending; that’s seen as a separate category altogether.

Consider Which Rewards You Prefer

There are two primary reward categories for dining credit cards: cash back and flexible points.

Several of the best cash-back credit cards include dining as a bonus category. If you don’t travel much and prefer the simplicity of earning a percentage of cash back on all your spending, this could be the way to go. Cash-back credit cards tend to have lower annual fees, too.

On the other hand, if you love earning points that you can use to book flights, hotels and more, choosing one of the best rewards credit cards that earns bonus points on dining is a better choice. While these cards often have higher annual fees, the rewards are also more valuable. With cash back, 1% back is always 1 cent back in value, whereas the value of points can vary depending on how you redeem them. And if you redeem points for business-class flights or hotel rooms with expensive cash rates, you can easily get several cents per point in value.

Annual Fee

As mentioned above, dining credit cards have a range of annual fees, with cash-back dining cards being the cheaper option compared to rewards cards that earn transferable points such as Amex Membership Rewards® or Chase Ultimate Rewards®.

Dining rewards credit cards with higher annual fees can still be worth it, but it all depends on how you use the card. Make sure you’re able to get enough value to justify the annual fee before applying.

Extra Dining Perks

At a minimum, the best dining cards offer bonus rewards on restaurant spending. However, some cards go beyond this to offer extra dining-related perks.

For example, the American Express® Gold Card, an advertising partner, has several dining statement credits in addition to earning 4x points at restaurants worldwide (on up to $50,000 in purchases per calendar year, then 1x). These include up to $120 in annual dining credits (up to $10 per month) when you pay with the Amex Gold at participating partners (including Grubhub, one of the easiest to use), up to $84 in annual credits toward U.S. Dunkin purchases, and up to $100 in U.S. Resy credits each year (enrollment required).

Resy is a restaurant reservation platform for restaurants across the U.S., as well as in international cities including Barcelona, Hong Kong and Madrid. Note that these benefits require enrollment through your account.

The Amex Gold Card also offers up to $120 in Uber Cash annually (up to $10 each month) when you add your card to your Uber account and use an American Express card for the transaction — and this applies to Uber Eats as well as Uber rides. $10 per month may not seem like much, but delivery fees add up quickly, so every bit helps. I personally love the Amex Gold for its combo of strong rewards and these extra monthly perks. I’m able to justify two delivery orders per month — one with the Uber credit and one with the $120 annual dining credit — and feel a little less guilty in the process.

As mentioned above, not all dining credit cards are created equal. One main differentiator is the type of rewards they earn (cash back or points), but some co-branded options earn bonus rewards for dining purchases with a specific platform.

Here are the three main categories:

  • Cash-back dining credit cards: These cards earn cash back on dining purchases. One popular example is the Capital One Savor Card, which earns 3% cash back on dining. It also earns 3% back at grocery stores, and on entertainment and popular streaming services, so this is an especially good choice if you want to maximize your cash-back earnings on virtually every food-related purchase you make.
  • Flexible points dining credit cards: Rather than earning cash back, this type of dining credit card earns points that you can redeem for travel through the issuer’s platform or by transferring to partner programs. For example, the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card earns 3x Ultimate Rewards points on dining. You can redeem Ultimate Rewards for travel, gift cards, and more directly through Chase, or you can move them over to the program’s selection of airline and hotel transfer partners to get even more value toward travel.
  • Co-branded dining credit cards: There aren’t too many dining credit cards that fall under this last category, but the main example can be a great option if you frequently order through DoorDash. The DoorDash Rewards Mastercard® earns 4% back on DoorDash and Caviar orders and 3% back on dining when purchased directly from a restaurant. It also comes with a free year of DashPass membership, which lowers delivery fees.

To get the most out of dining rewards credit cards, make sure you follow these tips:

  • Keep them in your wallet: Some credit cards don’t need a space in your wallet, since they only come in handy for occasional purchases like flights or online shopping. That’s not the case with dining cards; you’ll want to have them on hand whenever you’re out and about. I always keep the American Express® Gold Card and the Chase Sapphire Reserve in my wallet to ensure that I earn bonus points on every dining purchase. Sometimes, this has led to a surprise “double-dip” moment, such as when I used the Amex Gold to pay for dinner and drinks at a restaurant that happened to be eligible for the card’s Resy benefit. Getting a $50 credit on my account was a nice surprise.
  • Add them to your delivery platform accounts: Virtually all dining cards include delivery platforms like DoorDash, Grubhub and Postmates in their bonus categories  — and some cards, like the Chase Sapphire Reserve, even offer promos and discounts for DoorDash. To get the full benefits, make sure you have the relevant card loaded into your delivery account. Otherwise, you’ll miss out on savings.
  • Keep track of statement credits: Dining rewards cards that come with statement credits also come with higher annual fees. To make sure that the annual fee is worth it, you should stay on top of all available statement credits and make sure you take full advantage. That could mean putting a reminder in your calendar to use the monthly dining credit on the Amex Gold, or adding an alert to make sure you use the Chase Sapphire Reserve’s $300 dining credit, which is broken up into two credits of up to $150 (one from January through June and one from July through December).

We covered the top dining credit cards above, but there are a few more options that could make sense, especially if you’re a loyalist with the associated hotel or airline.

  • Citi Custom Cash® Card : This no-annual-fee card earns 5% back on your top eligible spend category each billing cycle on up to $500 spent (then 1%), and restaurants are among the eligible categories. 5% cash back is a great rate of return, and, conveniently, it applies to your top eligible category on a month-by-month basis, so even if you don’t spend a lot on restaurants in one month, you’ll still get 5% back on something else.
  • Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card: This is the most premium Marriott credit card, with a $650 annual fee, but if you’re a frequent Marriott guest, it’s worth it for the benefits and free night awards. As a bonus, the card comes with up to $300 in dining credits each year, awarded as up to $25 per month. This applies to purchases made at restaurants worldwide, so it’s easy to take advantage.
  • Other Amex cards with dining credits:
